Today we had our fellow classmates come to the garden and help transplant celery, tomatoes, sunflowers, and kale! I appreciate the help because sometimes we need more hands to help. Throughout this project we didn't receive much help from our peers but today we did and it was great!
Today we went to water the plants. Watering the plants is important to sustain the life of the growing vegetables. Brandon and I are trusted to go to the garden and water and that is very rewarding. Knowing that my enthusiasm and my positive attitude were transparent to the person who handed us that responsibility feels awesome!
Being at the garden can be fun! It is not just hard work and back breaking work. Going to the garden fills me with serenity and experiencing growth along side the vegetables. Previously a garden was just pretty to look at and, to me. Now it is therapeutic and it reliefs stress. The garden to me now is a piece of haven from my busy life.
Melissa, a fellow friend, came to the garden today with Brandon and I to transplant zucchinis. It was so much fun. I realized that it is important to garden with people who love you and will support you, that way it is enjoyable and makes gardening much more special.
Today was a rewarding day! We made quite the profit selling Rosemary, Lavender, and Sage at school, during parent conferences. The plants are all succulents and are drought tolerant plants, perfect for the California weather! Selling plants is hard work and it feels rewarding at the end of the day to know that you are part of something much more complex than yourself.
If you are interested in buying some feel free to stop on by ECHS and ask the front office.
Today we were helping the freshmen build compost bins! Sammy, my Green Ambassador Internship supervisor, brought over some hay. Hay can be put into the compost to help neutralize the Nitrogen. It also helps reduce the odors produce by the compost.
Today helped me realize that team work is important during a big project. It is also important to have others that are reliable and will do there part of the project. While I gathered up the hay Brandon, Facio, and freshmen helped bring it to where the compost bins were located. Without that teamwork present it would not have been as efficient. Team work makes the dream work!
Today I transfered a lavender plant to the garden. Lavender is a perennial plant, meaning it will continue to re-appear. It is a drought tolerant plant. Lavender can be used in home made oils and perfumes.
This day I also planted beans along side Brandon. You can see it on his page.
I am currently obsessed with Lavender, it is my favorite scent and it is so beautiful to look at! I can not wait to plant the Lavender I got with my grandpa!
This picture was taken when we had just finished planting carrot and beet seeds. Did you know that carrots are full of fiber? Eat some carrots and your intestines will thank you later. Planting was really fun, I learned that I love being in the dirt getting messy! I have also embraced working with my hands and I do not mind getting 'down and dirty'. I really enjoy working with my hands.
If I had not gardened I would have not learned that I really like working with my hands.
Here I am in a Rosemary bush. After the picture I was coated with with a delightful aroma! I learned that Rosemary is a perennial it does very well in the sun light. Rosemary in spanish is Romero, it can be used in food and while cooking. As you can see in the picture Rosemary grows to be pretty big and bushy.
Excuse the blur of the picture. This is Maria, the project coordinator at From Lot to Spot. From Lot to Spot is a non-profit organization committed to bringing green space equality to low income communities. I often volunteer for events From Lot to Spot organizes.
I enjoy life and the beauty it holds. One of those beauties is gardening. Hello, my name is Natalie and I am 18 years old, and I am passionate about food. Hence my research paper about food inequity. My passion of food was born in the kitchen while I was observing my mother or father cook.
I have two younger siblings, a sister and a brother, that I love. I enjoy spending my spare time with my four year old brother, we are constantly consumed by our imaginations; some days we are sharks, other days we are Batman and Robin. I adore my younger brother Mikey, he brings joy to my life. Gardening also brings joy to my life, I enjoy spending time with my grandpa outside looking at all the herbs he has in the backyard. It is a smaller place but he makes it work.
That is what I aspire to do, bring joy to others through easier access to healthy nutritious foods.
